Program Overview

In tiny homes with walls so thin,
Where sunlight struggles to peek in.
Narrow lanes and crowded ways,
Yet dreams still shine in hopeful rays. Feet on dust, hearts so strong,
They fight for rights, they've waited long.
Laughter echoes, stories unfold,
In hands so rough, ambitions hold.

Introduction

Slums are an undeniable reality of urban and rural life, yet they are often overlooked. These settlements exist in almost every major city and many villages, housing millions of people who struggle daily for survival. Life in slums is not just about poverty; it is a complex combination of social, economic, and environmental challenges. While slums are often associated with hardship, they are also filled with resilience, community spirit, and hope. People living in slums continue to work hard to improve their conditions despite the obstacles they face. Understanding the life of slum dwellers is crucial for developing empathy and creating solutions that can improve their living standards. This syllabus will help students explore the reasons behind the existence of slums, the difficulties people face, the social issues connected with slum life, and the ongoing efforts to bring about change. By learning about real-life experiences, students will also get an opportunity to see how people in slums find ways to survive, grow, and create a better future for themselves.
